Beware Browns Inlet

On the chance that a fellow traveller might read this before reaching Browns Inlet, NC, proceed VERY CAREFULLY through the inlet! We failed to get the the waypoints in the 2012 edition of Skipper Bob’s “Anchorages Along the Intracoastal Waterway” (which came from the US Army Corps of Engineers) entered into our GPS in time, so we had to feel our way through, and we got stuck a few times (never hard aground because we were going slowly, but still stuck). You could probably find more recent info from the USACOE directly. Our draft is 5’6″.

(Also…this is back a ways, but when crossing Bogue Inlet, leave G45A WELL to port…)

Bruce and I have been following you along your trip and really enjoying the voyage. It is thanksgiving here and because of that I guess maybe I’m wanting to say thank you for allowing us to come along through this blog.
wishing you all the best in your travels.

Thanks Angela & Bruce. Glad you’re enjoying the stories, we’re having a lot of fun. Though we’re not traveling very fast, it seems like we’re experiencing a lot!

    Hey You Two,
Just had a great read catching up on your travels! Wanted to wish you both a very Happy Thanksgiving and tell you we miss you lots! Just had my 5th Turkey dinner and am good for a while now. Thanks for the card Maryl. It made me cry! Would love a call when you can. Stay safe.
    Love

Happy Thanksgiving! We miss you too! Sorry so long without calling…we’ve been in the boonies for the last little while, but we’re almost in Charleston (about an hour away). We’ll give a call this weekend so we can talk to the kids too…tell them we’ve seen so many Dolphins we don’t bother taking pictures of them anymore.

Thanks for the info for fellow cruisers. It’s always nice to check out your posts since you’re ahead of us, we can find out early what to avoid and places to stop and enjoy. Enjoy your warm weather down south!

Hi Matt & Jessica – We think of you and the gang from the boat-party-between-Locks 3 ‘n 4 a lot as we make our way south. The worst shoaling we’ve seen was in Bogue & Browns inlets (N.C.). Other than a few gentle bumps (actually, the one at Bogue Inlet wasn’t so gentle), it’s been a beautiful trip. Hope our paths cross again soon!
