Going Fast is Overrated

We’re in Miami – we arrived late yesterday afternoon and are anchored in Sunset Lake, which is north of the east end of the Venetian Causeway. “Lake” makes is sound bigger than it is; it’s more like a wide spot in a canal, but we’re surrounded on all sides by well-groomed palm trees and what look to me like multi-million dollar homes. It’s scenic and we’re very well protected from the windy weather we’re getting.

We took the dinghy to Miami Beach today. We were greeted by this site after we tied up and stepped on shore.

Busted
Busted

Sorry about the low quality of the pic (I had some iPhone-computer technical difficulties). We assumed this guy got busted for speeding, but after the police cuffed him, we weren’t too sure.

Having spent the last three months seeing the world at about 8 miles an hour, we have a harder time understanding the need for speed, even after renting the car.

I’m currently in a McDonald’s using the WiFi (reminds me of the early days of the Riverboat Fantasy Tour of Upstate New York Dunkin’ Donuts). We should get our Internet do-dad reactivated today, though, so we’ll be back in business with access from the boat.

We’ll tell you all about what kept us in “The Venice of America” for eleven days a little later.

‘Til then…

Hey Guys: Now I’ll now you miss Ottawa . . . it’s -11 here today but feels like -18. However, it’s going up to +8 on the weekend with rain. I think the guy got cuffed/busted for speeding and theft. See the Porsche the was driving . . . at least it looks like a Porsche. We were in the hot tub last night and pretended that we were somewhere else that was very very warm.

    Maryl,

We should be catching up with you soon, did Doug already meet you? how are you getting your internet on the boat and have you any ideas for the Bahamas. I rely on WiiFii but would love to hear how others do it. We should be in Miami about the end of next week and then crossing over. Will keep tracking you. Cherry

      Hi Cherry,

Yes, we both met Doug at NSC. Phill wants to thank him for convincing us to get a chart plotter and for introducing us to Skipper Bob – hopefully he’ll get to do that in person in the Bahamas.

For internet on the boat, we got an AT&T USBConnect Force 4G stick. We get pay-as-you-go data plans (no contract required) and so far it has worked well for the most part. We have weak connectivity where we are now in Miami – not sure why (good enough for email but not good enough for Skype).

There are data plans for the Bahamas and the Caribbean as well…
