Samaná or Bust

We’re about to leave Ocean World Marina in Cofresi, DR (near Puerto Plata), for Samaná. It’s our only decent weather window for several days, so we’re going to get a move on. I’ll tell you about the “Mayhem on the Malecón” later.

It’ll take 26 hours or so to get there…’til then.

(P.S.: Happy Birthday, Cal!)

Things Went Sideways on Us

We couldn’t make it to Samaná (we’re blaming it on a combination of rough seas and high wind off the North coast of Hispaniola and some nasty seasickness), so we’ve stopped in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, instead.

We arrived about 6:00 this morning, and are just waiting for customs & immigration to arrive, so I better sign off for now.

Inertia

Wikipedia describes inertia as the resistance of an object to change its state of motion or rest. We’ve been resisting a change to our state of rest here in Provo for a month to the day, today, which might explain why we’re not off to a blistering start.

We told everybody last night that we’d be casting off at 8 this morning. Pffffffttttttt! It’s now 11:00 am and we’re still at the fuel dock; but you know how it is, nothin’s easy on the boat.

Provo’s been a great stop for us; we’re well rested & ready for the next leg, and today’s the day to get a move on (albeit a late one). We’re aiming for Dominican Republic and hope to get to Samaná by sometime Wednesday, but we’ll see how we do.

We’re really going to miss the friends (new & old) we’ve made in Provo & North Caicos – we could have settled in for who-knows-how-long here. Our wait for weather has been a very easy one, and we now have a new gotta-go-back destination on the map.

Until Samaná (or Luperon if things go sideways on us)…

Our Laptop is Having a Meltdown

Happy New Year! Wishing you all the best of everything in 20-Baker’s-Dozen (we’re told by a local Captain that unnecessarily uttering that famous number made up of a “1” and a “3” is bad luck for seafarers like us).

Our New Year is off to a technically-challenged start. Our laptop won’t turn on. Dead, no response. We’ve contacted the manufacturer, tried all their magic key combination suggestions, but it’s still dead. Sounds like we’re going to have to send it in, which is challenging in itself.

It’s not just a laptop to us…it’s our telephone, our TV (no Downton Abbey tonight or for the foreseeable future 🙁 ), it’s how we stay connected on the blog (I don’t know how tje kids do it…iPod-typing is not fun).

So, in other words, a real bump in our glide.

The weather is too feisty for us to go anywhere for several days, so we have time to sort something out. TCI has an abundance of sunshine and beauty, but not electronics/computer stores. Oh well…we’ll figure it out. On the Things-That-Can-Go-Wrong-On-Your-Boat scale, this is minor.

One last thing…we decided to head south from here…DR here we come.
